Come to me, Ren. I will give you the power you still desire...
The words were still ringing in his ears when he woke. He shuddered a bit and turned onto his side to slide out of bed. Maybe once he had desired power enough that he might have considered the offer, but now the idea only made him sick.
Mostly.
Ren tried to put the dream out of his mind as he went through the motions of getting ready for the day--at home, he had been a bit absent minded about this, but here in this strange place, the routine took Tetsu's place in keeping him somewhat grounded. Check to see if he'd received any messages; take a quick shower; take a quick look outside to find out where he was today, go downstairs to see if there was a breakfast bar.
Looking outside was always the best part, because it would always be different, and sometimes there was a nice surprise in the form of one of his units wandering down the street below. It was always better to take a shower first and not look immediately, so he could wake up a bit more and fully anticipate the surprise, but he usually rushed through it anyway.
He didn't rush today, but by the time he was pulling his clothes on again, he'd managed to mostly put his dream out of his mind. He tucked his communicator away into one of his pockets and slowly crossed to the window to take a look. Maybe Blaster Dark would be waiting for him today. That was always a nice surprise.
He pulled the curtains open...and then nearly pulled them from their hanger in shock.
There was darkness gathering at the edge of the district--a horrible, all-encompassing darkness that curled and lapped around the buildings like the waves of the sea. As he stared at it, a tugging feeling began forming behind his eyes, a feeling that was all too familiar from the last thing he remembered of home.
I have seen your heart, Suzugamori Ren, and it is mine...
His fist clenched around the curtain and he dragged it shut hard enough to rip the fabric in a couple places. He had known since he'd learned the nature of this place that he could bring to life some very dangerous things--and he was hardly the only one--but the one time he had dreamed of Dragonic Overload, the dragon that had appeared had listened to him and obeyed him tamely. Most of the units he called forth did, or they weren't the type to cause random havoc anyway. But this...
He had never imagined that he might be able to bring Void here...
His fists clenched at his sides, and in an instant, he was stalking across the room to the door. This was his responsibility, he was the one who had dreamed up that cloud of nothingness, and he was not going to allow it to hurt anyone or face anyone else. It would face him and he would defeat it and send it back where it came from.
Maybe it was because his attention was on other things, one one thing, maybe it was because of the surreality of the situation, but Ren thought the streets seemed oddly still and quiet as he made his way through them. There were still people going about their business, and he offered smiles and a wave or two to those he knew, and there was still the odd assortment of creatures called forth in the night, which were easy enough to avoid, but the air itself seemed still and most people were avoiding looking in the direction he was going.
He wished absently that Asaka could be here. She always made it easier for him to smile and feel playful, if only to keep her from feeling down; she could have added some lightness to the situation.
He followed the tugging of his Psyqualia until he reached the edge of the darkness. Here, there was no life at all, although he thought it was more because the other residents had instinctively stayed away than because Void had destroyed them. He placed a hand on his deck to reassure himself that it was still there and stepped inside, where the waves of ill intent would be able to lead him easily enough.
As he walked along the deserted streets, it almost felt like being back on Cray, wandering through the darkness in a desperate search to find Souryuu Leon. He did wonder if maybe it would be Leon he came across at the end. He didn't remember any of of his dream but the voice.
He turned a corner that led to a small plaza and stopped, because there in the center was the whirlwind of darkness he'd been looking for. A small smile touched his lips and he ran his fingers through his hair. That had been a lot easier than he'd thought it might be...
"Aahh, looks like I found you," Ren said. He tugged at a lock of hair one more time before letting his hand drop back to his side. "I thought you might make it more of a challenge."
A laugh echoed out of the darkness, a laugh that sent shivers down his spine, and the whirlwind began to subside.
"Now, why would I do that when I only ever wanted to speak to you?" whispered a soft voice, all too familiar, and the darkness fell away completely.
Ren nearly took a step backward as the face of his reflection smiled and opened his arms wide.
"No," Ren murmured, and for a moment, the world around them flickered between the empty plaza and the desolate surface of Cray. "No. All I ever did was hurt my friends and everyone else around me. I don't need your so-called power. I'm not like that anymore!"
His reflection chuckled and gave him a pitying smile that struck far too close to home. "So quick to jump to conclusions..."
The other boy began walking toward him, and this time Ren did take a step back. What else could it have wanted to talk to him for? He must have woken up with those words ringing in his ears for a reason.
"Do you think I don't know you, Suzugamori Ren?" his reflection murmured as it began walking around him. Ren tried to keep his eyes on it, but he wasn't exactly owl, and he wasn't going to actually move his feet and turn around. "Do you think I didn't see as you led your army toward the destruction of Cray, that I wasn't watching as Sendou Aichi taught you the ways of teamwork and cooperation and led you back into the arms of your friends? You no longer desire power for the sake of harming others, I know."
The other boy stopped directly behind him, and Ren tensed as he felt it lean close to whisper in his ear.
"I'm here because you're lonely. You are, aren't you? So lonely it feels as though you're empty inside, and you would do anything to fill that void."
"That's not true," Ren said, but it came out as more of a childish whine than he really wanted, because it was true and he hated it. "I've made friends here. I'm not alone."
"But they're not the friends you really want, are they?" said his reflection as it walked back around to the front of him. "I know you know you have no desire for the power to harm others, Ren, but what if I could give you the power to be with your friends again?"
Ren finally had to just look away from his warped reflection. He wanted that, oh he wanted that--it would be stupid to lie to himself and say he didn't--but did he really want that kind of power from Void? No, no, he did not; all Void was ever after was increasing its own power and destroying anything it came across to do it, and he had come here to destroy it and make sure it couldn't take over this world the way it had tried with Cray and would have tried with Earth...
But if there was one thing that probably did have the power to reconnect him with his friends--with Tetsu and Kai and Asaka and Aichi--it was Void. There was no escaping that.
"Imagine what you could do with the power I could give you," the boy said with a friendly smile. "You could walk up to your dear King and Queen and demand that they bring your friends here, or that they send you home. You could open a fissure in space and simply walk between here and Cray and Earth. You could call your friends here in spirit and they would never have to leave home."
Ren clamped his hands over his ears and shut his eyes tight halfway through that speech, but it wasn't enough. He could hear every word, and he wanted it. The power to ensure he could always be with his friends? He had never desired anything more. He had always desired that; why else had he been so angry with Kai and tried to manipulate him back to his side?
He wouldn't need to manipulate Kai now, though, or anyone else who didn't deserve it. He just needed to give them a way to reach him, and he was sure they would come, or else he could simply go back to them...
He opened his eyes to find his reflection holding its hand out to him. Its eyes glowed with the pink swirl of Psyqualia and the smile on its face was no longer kind, and Ren didn't trust it at all. It was Void...
But he wanted to.
"Would you hurt them?" Ren asked, not yet moving his hand from the sides of his head. "My friends? They're leaders of the armies trying to destroy you too..."
His reflection flipped its hair and leered at him. "Of course not. Anyone you want to protect would be safe from me."
Ren eyed him dubiously--this was Void, he couldn't trust it, of course it would say something like that if it thought it would endear it to him--but his desire won out. He needed to fill the gaping hole in his life where his friends used to be, he needed it, and the power to do it was standing right in front of him with open arms.
He was shaking a bit, but Ren reached out to take the hand that was offered to him.
