The wikia article is seriously lacking with regards to his personality, so it might be better to just ignore anything concerning his personality in that.

Also, apparently season one takes place over a little less than a year WHICH MAKES NO SENSE THANKS CARD GAME SHOW TIMELINES, so Ren will be 16-going-on-17 when he gets brought into Route.

Also also, it's really, really, really unclear whether the changes in season two are mass selective memory loss or the formation of a new alternate timeline entirely. There are things that point to both equally and we probably won't be getting any answers soon. I personally lean more toward selective memory loss/rewriting, which means Ren's memory of his deck before season 2 is of a Gold Paladin deck, but kind of fuzzy and with a feeling of that being not quite right. Also, it seems no one remembers the previous instance of Psyqualia, even the people who had it, so he also has some HUGE GAPING HOLES where his Psyqualia use used to be--although when Aichi got Psyqualia again, he at least knew it was familiar and remembered enough to know not to use it, so the same may be true of Ren. Which still means huge gaping holes, but if he actually sat down and thought about it, he might be able to connect the dots.

BASICALLY SEASON TWO IS STUPID AND THEY HAVEN'T HANDLED THIS PARTICULAR PLOT POINT WELL.

How I'll be playing it is that Ren's memories of just about every fight between his first getting Psyqualia to Aichi finally defeating him at Nationals will be kind of fuzzy--he can remember the general flow of the fight and who won and maybe even sort of how (was it because he pulled a trigger, was his opponent just not able to guard, etc.) but with no real memory of what cards were used. And he doesn't really remember why Kai left in the first place or why he was so angry with him, or why he was so interested in Aichi.

If canon ends up finally saying something concrete about this, I'll change it, but for now he hasn't said a word, so this is what I'll be going with.

Personality:
For a show that might as well be a 20 minute commercial for a card game, Vanguard actually has some very well-done, complex characters, Ren being one of them. Ren's base personality is mostly polite (except for his habit of using the most informal name possible for a person or even using a nickname when they've maybe spoken once ever) and overwhelmingly cheerful and friendly (he seems to go out of his way to make sure everyone is having fun, or will be in the future, even if that person would really rather be doing something else). He has almost a constant smile on his face and is generally very chipper and playful and in good spirits.

He also shares some similarities deep down with Kai; to quote Tetsu (because he put it so well): "they both hate anything crooked and they both stick to the decisions they've made. And also, they value their friends more than anything." By "friends", Tetsu meant himself and Kai, but this is a trait seen well into season two with regards to just about everyone and is part of why Ren works so hard to make sure everyone he values as a friend is happy and living to his/her full potential.

Most strikingly, though, his core personality includes being equal parts manipulative and a complete space case.

Ren has a knack for knowing exactly what to say or do to get someone to get along with one of his schemes, or just how far he can push a person before they're pushed to the side of never doing what he wants out of spite. Even as a supposed good guy, he has no problem turning on the charm and manipulating exactly what he wants out of people. As a bad guy, he also had no problem with pushing his luck way too far.

There are also times when he forgets how to get into his own building, that he somehow had built for him, so that he may very well have stood outside the front doors all day if someone hadn't come along to help him.

This also means he tends to answer questions in the most straightforward but bizarre way possible, and he rarely ends up sharing more than is required to answer the question. If he decides to share all on his own, then great, get ready for story time, but when prompted he'll say just enough to make him feel satisfied in his answer and no more. This is generally not enough to satisfy anyone else, of course.

This also means he can be a bit tactless at times, because he'll just say what's on his mind without considering whether it might be rude or hurtful. Ren is generally very kind at heart, so nothing he ends up saying is horrible or worth breaking a friendship over, and he's certainly never intentionally trying to be hurtful, but he does apparently think that "you're a much more capable fighter than I thought!" is a good compliment.

In fact, Ren's airheadness is so much a part of him, he retained it even as the main antagonist of season one, along with all the other above traits.

In fact, it's those traits that created Ren-the-antagonist in the first place. Ren was so obsessively desperate and determined to become a better cardfight for his teammates that he became susceptible to Psyqualia and ended up embracing it with open arms. Psyqualia is an incredible power that basically tells the user how to win ever cardfight he plays, which was perfect for helping Ren's team get to the National Championships, but it comes with a price--the user's personality warps until they're a rather vicious and cruel version of themselves.

In Ren, this meant his manipulation was turned up ten-fold, his sense of justice was warped until he found himself hating Kai for years for leaving the team, and his politeness and friendliness became somewhat creepy and condescending. Psyqualia also brought out a mean streak that had him mercilessly mocking other people and teams, saying that they were wasting their time by even thinking they might be on his level, as well as a thirst for power that went beyond the Vanguard arena. He spent most of the season trying to encourage Aichi to turn out the same way and join forces with him, just to get back at Kai and prove he'd been right about his power being a good thing all along. In the end, he even decided to abandon all ideas of teamwork and friendship and claim he only trusted himself...probably, again, because of Kai leaving (pretty much everything that happens in this plot is partially Kai's fault, poor guy).

To put it lightly, Ren-the-antagonist was kind of a terrible, spiteful, creepy, jealous person and everyone is thankful that person is seemingly nowhere to be found anymore.

However, as Aichi put it with his own terrible, horrible, no good self, that person was always in there. Ren doesn't let those more negative traits come out to play anymore, because now he's aware of them and he can keep himself in check (and they aren't even really going to rear their ugly heads unless something drastic happened anyway), but he still has those tendencies in there somewhere. They're a part of him, whether they're a large part or not.

Strengths/Weaknesses:
Strengths:
Vanguard fighting, of course! Even though he spent years using Psyqualia, Ren grew to be an excellent cardfighter in his own right. This doesn't mean much on its own, but Ren's particular style requires him to use a lot of intricate strategies, and he's easily able to adapt that style to various different decks. Those decks don't always really work well with his strategies, but he's always able to make them work well enough to be a viable threat.

He also has to to be fairly adaptable to play at such a level--sometimes the cards you need just don't show up and you're forced to do something else. He also takes this one step further by trying out various decks other than his own to force himself to adapt even better, and also to give himself better perspective on what he might be able to do with his own deck. He's always trying to learn more about the game and get even better at it.

He's also extremely resourceful, as shown by the giant office building he had built. How did he get someone to build him an office building when he was fourteen? Who knows, but he figured something out. It might have had something to do with how manipulative he can be, which is also one of his strengths.

Also he is somehow an excellent cook by just dumping whatever he feels like into a pot and putting it on the fire. How does this work? Who knows, but it happened and the food was not only edible, it made children cry with just how great it was.

Weaknesses:
Ren doesn't have a lot of weaknesses, but the ones he has are kind of severe.

The airheadedness can be kind of a problem. A lot of the time. As was mentioned before, Ren forgot how to get into his own building and was fully prepared to stand outside until the magic doors he wasn't actually standing in front of finally opened for him. It could have been hours before anyone came by and stopped to find out what he was doing. And he can be a bit tactless, which hasn't gotten him into trouble yet, but easily could with the wrong person.

His other major weakness is just how obsessive he can be, especially when it means helping his friends. His determination isn't usually such a bad thing, and it actually very good to have in a cardfight, but Ren just takes everything too far. It's what made him so susceptible to Psyqualia in the first place; he was so determined to help his friends that he was willing to do anything. In the right situation, that might be an asset, but most of the time it just gets him into trouble.

His obsessive tendencies have been showing up a bit in season two, as well--namely with his obsession of trying every deck possible to see how they work and how he's still trying to get better and better at Vanguard--although now he has three people around him to keep him in check. But he still ended up with Psyqualia again (although without the personality side effects thankfully) and both his obsessive tendencies and airheadedness together make him a prime target for other deals with the devil for special powers and abilities.

[Route, I hope you were prepared for a very excited looking Ren on you screens this evening, because that is exactly what you're getting. A very bright, smiling, waving, excited Ren.

This usually means nothing good will be coming out of his mouth. And if the look on the Absol behind him is anything to go by, that's probably the case this time, too.
]

Hiiiii, everyone! This is Suzugamori Ren, and I had a really great idea for Halloween. That's coming up really soon, isn't it? [he briefly turns thoughtful and kind of sad] I haven't gotten to celebrate it much the last few years...

[and quickly enough, he's back to being his usual smiley self] But that isn't why I'm here.

I found a place to rent on the edge of town, and I think if a few of us got together to work on it, we could put together a haunted house! [he briefly glances off screen with a faint "now, Vermilion" and the lower half of the screen--and his face--light up with a flickering warm glow. which makes him look kind of creepy, as was the point. he goes on with an obvious air of trying to be spooky and...not doing fantastically well.]

A really scary haunted house. We'll have to have people help so some of the scaring, and maybe some pokemon too. That's part of the fun, after all! I bet we could get some ghost pokemon to help out too; some of them seem to love trying to scare people. And we'll have to put up some good decorations...

But it'd be kind of silly to decorate a whole house and not have anyone show up. So everyone should try to come and help out, even if you just want to walk through and be scared!

[Ren smiles again, although this time it's a hopeful, and he gestures to Vermilion to let the fire go out for now.] It could be a lot of fun, right? I think we should do it.

Third Person Sample:
It was a good day to be lazy and just lie around, Ren had decided. It was just warm enough to be comfortable and there were just enough clouds in the sky to keep him entertained. And he didn't really have anywhere in particular to go right now. So he found a peer and laid down with his legs over the edge, toes just barely touching the water, to watch the clouds go by for a while.

That had probably been hours ago, but he really wasn't keeping track. There was a cloud he'd been watching for a while now that kind of looked like Tetsu, and after a while it started looking more like a castle, and then into something that maybe looked like an Absol. Although maybe he just thought that because his Absol kind of reminded him of Tetsu. Or Kai, but then, they were an awful lot alike. Both of them were stiff and serious almost all the time and neither of them really knew how to have fun. And both of them acted like they had to be there to look out for him, because he couldn't look out for himself. They'd deny if if he ever said something, but they did.

Well, he'd been here for a few weeks now without either of them and he was doing just fine, thank you.

The cloud had shifted enough that it didn't really look like anything at all now. Ren frowned at it and started looking around for another cloud to watch.

His gaze landed on his Absol instead, who was sitting near by--still within arms reach, but just barely--and watching him with his usual patient look. Ren wondered just how long the pokemon had been sitting there without him realizing it. Probably about as long as he'd been laying here, staring at the sky.

"You don't have to sit there," Ren said after a moment. "You could come lay down too."

Absol just stared at him for a moment and then looked up at the sky itself. Of course it wouldn't want to do anything silly like lay around all day. It really was a lot like Tetsu.

He really missed Tetsu and Kai and Asaka. Especially Kai, who was finally back in his life after so long apart. And Asaka, who was always willing to go along with any of his ideas. And Tetsu, who had been there for him since he could remember.

But the Asbol at least helped him miss Tetsu a little less.

Ren slowly turned over onto his stomach and propped his chin on his crossed arms. He'd been meaning to see if his pokemon wanted a name other than just "Absol" for a while, but he kept forgetting about it. It really would be better if it had its own name, though. Well...he thought Tetsu would be a good name, so it wouldn't really be its own name, but it would be something.

Of curse, when he opened his mouth to say something, his stomach suddenly growled embarrassingly loudly. Absol looked back over immediately, giving him a very unimpressed look. Ren pouted back at him and slowly got to his feet.

"I guess I forgot we needed to get some more food today, didn't I?" Ren took a moment to stretch--he really must have been laying there a long time--and then he started off back toward the other end of the peer. "Well, let's go then, Tetsu-kun."

He looked back again when he noticed his Asbol wasn't actually following him, only to find it staring at him with the most incredulous look he'd seen on it's face yet. He just smiled and waved for it to follow. "Lets gooo, Tetsu-kun."

The Absol stared at him for another long moment before he finally got up and plodded down the pier toward him. Ren wasn't sure if it actually liked the name or not, but it didn't have to be permenant, he supposed. But he liked it well enough for now; they could come up with something else some other time.
